If you've lost a significant amount of weight, you may have gotten something you didn't bargain for—loose skin drooping from your arms, chest and upper back. Perhaps you're even wearing a larger blouse or shirt size than you would otherwise just to accommodate the sagging skin.
Many people who lose significant amounts of weight find they still don’t feel comfortable with their chest and upper back regions. The area from just below the neck to the bottom of the ribs is called the “upper trunk” or “thorax”. San Antonio plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Bindewald can help you address these concerns with an upper body lift.
An upper body lift is an extensive surgical procedure that needs to be approached with care by the patient and by an expertly trained surgeon. With just a few exceptions, an upper body lift is one of the most significant surgical procedures that an ordinary person can undergo. Board Cerfitied surgeon Dr. Matthew Bindewald offers this procedure in his San Antonio, Texas office.
The goals of an upper body lift are: flattening and tightening the torso, upper arms, chest, and back and removing any excess skin from these areas. An upper body lift is typically a comprehensive surgery, combining procedures such as:
- Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck
- Breast Reduction
- Breast Lift (men) (women)
- Upper Arm Lift
In order to make sure that the patient can undergo an upper body lift as safely as possible, we perform an extensive workup to rule out any potentially preventable problems. The best candidates for upper body lift are those who have developed a series of problems due to the process of significant weight gain and subsequent dramatic weight loss and experienced deflation in the area of the upper trunk.
Though the surgery is extensive, generally patients are expected to walk the same day of surgery, once they are awake and alert. Patients are typically expected to stay in the hospital for a day following surgery.
The results of an upper body lift are very significant immediately after surgery and will continue to dramatically change and improve over a 1-year period. Scar quality will also continue to mature and improve for that same 1-year period.
If you’ve recently undergone significant weight loss and would like to learn more about an upper body lift in South or Central Texas, please call our San Antonio office at 844-DR-MATTB (844.376.2882) to inquire about a consultation with plastic surgeon Dr. Matt Bindewald.
