Age related changes around the eyes include hooded, wrinkled eyelids, drooping eyebrows, frown lines, bulging fat pockets, bags, and dark circles. These changes around the eyes can result in developing an angry, sleepy, or tired look. More than any other facial feature, your eyes reveal the most about how you feel. When your eyes are bright and alert, you appear energized. It is truly amazing the difference patients experience even with a small amount of upper eyelid skin removal.

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid lift surgery was the third most popular cosmetic procedure performed in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). For patients considering eyelid surgery in South Texas, this procedure is a great starting point for facial rejuvenation.

Eyelid surgery is a cosmetic operation that seeks to give the upper and lower eyelids a more youthful look by removal of excessive skin, fat, and/or tissue. There are many reasons why you would choose to get a blepharoplasty. This procedure can help remove signs of aging such as droopy or baggy eyes; however, it cannot correct things such as crow’s feet, sagging eyebrows, and dark circles.

Blepharoplasty procedures typically take one to three hours, but this depends on the extent of the surgery. During the procedure, incisions are made along your natural lines and creases so that extra fatty tissue can be removed or repositioned. The surgeon will also trim any extra skin and tissue that is sagging.

The time it takes to recover from eyelid surgery is different for everyone. Most patients return to work after about a week, but strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks following surgery.  The results will be a noticeable but not drastic change.

Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait at least several weeks to get an accurate picture of the results of your eyelid surgery. Incisions will fade over a number of months, becoming barely visible. Even though the aging process continues, patients are typically very happy with their new, more youthful appearance for many years.
